Overview Senior Building Inspector. Under direction, the Senior Building Inspector monitors and reviews records, reports and correspondence of subordinate personnel; performs inspections of buildings and structures; interprets and explains codes, regulations, ordinances, and laws pertaining to building construction and maintenance; prepares investigation reports; resolves conflicts between the public and subordinates; represents the department at meetings and hearings; coordinates and maintains records of safety training for staff; may act as a team leader for emergency purposes; and performs related duties as required. Key Responsibilities Supervises building inspectors and/or subordinate staff by assigning, monitoring, and evaluating their work; provides training on interpretation and application of building codes, ordinances and laws to ensure compliance. Manages construction projects to ensure quality control and code compliance. Reviews and revises records, reports, plan reviews, notices of violation, and related documents to ensure work is performed correctly and in conformance with policies and standards. Interprets and explains building codes, regulations, and laws to staff, architects, engineers, contractors, and the public; including Building Code, Housing Code, Mechanical Code, energy conservation standards, and accessibility requirements. Disseminates department procedures accurately and resolves conflicts during plan review and field inspections. Represents the department at meetings, hearings and in court to testify or present information regarding code violation cases and related matters. Acts as a team leader for emergency response when needed; performs site visits and reviews plans with or without staff; ensures inspections are completed in a timely manner. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Experience: Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a building inspector with a public agency performing duties equivalent to class 6331 Building Inspector with the City and County of San Francisco. License and Certification: Possession of a valid Class C California driver license. Possession of the Commercial and Residential Building Inspector certifications or the Building Plans Examiner certification, issued by the International Code Council (ICC), is required. Inspectors must maintain the certification as a condition of continued employment. Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours; overtime hours beyond 40 per week are not included in the calculation. Desirable Qualifications Twenty-four (24) months of verifiable experience as a Building Inspector in plan review and construction inspection of Automated Train Systems, Passenger Stations and Guideway related to Fixed Guideway Transit Systems and Passenger Rail Systems. Experience on projects with fueling operations or storage of flammables or Housing Occupancy. Experience on Parking Garages with S Occupancy. Code experience or experience with buildings that have indoor atriums or required smoke control.
